Ghillied is a small team of like minded individuals. We rediscovered our passion for the outdoors whilst furloughed, and are great believers in the benefits to the mind and body of breathing in fresh air and exercising outdoors in bonnie Scotland. Bonnie being the operative word… we count ourselves lucky to live in a country with some of the most naturally beautiful scenery in the world. This scenery is under no greater threat than in the current climate crisis.
Pollution does not just affect what we can see on land, but also underwater. In our oceans, there are an estimated 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets left each year, which is the largest polluter in the ocean. Imagine a world where all clothing was made from recycled materials such as waste fishing nets. At Ghillied, our vision is to become a global leader in planet friendly recycled clothing, by creating a circular economy of clothes.
Our purpose is to build a Ghillied Clan of people truely inspired by the outdoors, and who wear clothing that symbolise care for the planet. We have a sense of urgency to do our bit to protect the planet, and subsequently the platform that we use to remain healthy ourselves.
At Ghillied, we feel extremely privileged to live in a country as beautiful as Scotland. We are a country which is often idolised as having some of the most naturally beautiful, green and picturesque scenery anywhere on Earth.
We are great believers in high quality recycled clothing being a genuine solution to fishing net and plastic waste clogging up our oceans. Better yet, we are limiting the waste going back into landfill by recycling clothing back into our manufacturing process! You can read more about the materials that we use here.
Longer term, we have our sights on larger sustainability projects and carbon neutrality. This being said, we also understand that one company cannot make the difference required to reverse the damage currently being caused to our planet. However, collective responsibility between individual people really can make a difference. This is why we do what we do at Ghillied – if everyone wore recycled clothing, the planet will benefit massively from our increasingly considerate actions.
Derived from Scottish Mythology, a Gillie Dubh was a fairy who lived in the Scottish Highlands and dressed in leaves and moss (you may recognise the word Ghillie from a ‘Ghillie Suit’ in which you literally wear the outdoors).
Although we like to think that Ghillied products are more fashionable than mystic fairies in the Highlands, our name and products remain connected to the Scottish outdoors – they are created from re-purposed nylon waste which is damaging our environment, with the purpose of exploring the beautiful outdoors.
Starting a sustainable clothing brand is easier said that done… it took our small team 18 months of product designing and tweaking, website building, changing suppliers, fabric development, and building marketing plans (picking up countless reasons to not start a business along the way). The experience was completely new to us and we learnt something new every day, constantly acting like a sponge of information. We didn’t stop until we were satisfied that our products had a deep enough connection with nature, had a low carbon footprint, and were made to last. We knew that when we got it right, Ghillied would be the perfect platform for our beliefs – helping people by encouraging them to get outdoors.

SLÁINTE - TO GOOD HEALTH
The Founder’s Message
“Attitudes are changing for the better in the world – more than ever, people care about the environment, their health and each other. It is important that we continue these conversations and encourage ourselves and others to stay healthy, whilst making sure our decisions benefit the planet too. At Ghillied, we are starting as we mean to go on… with sustainability at the heart of everything we do. In simple terms, this means: looking after the environment, our supply chain, and our customers. Get out, keep a healthy body and mind, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors.”
